How it came together...
When the attacks happened last year, Mom and I wanted to rush right up to
New York and do something, anything to
help. Neither of us were able to give blood at
the time, so we didn't know what to do,
just like so many people out there.
We are native New Yorkers so the
Towers falling was especially difficult.
We both have a background in sewing, more
specifically, costume design, but we'd
never attempted a quilt before.
We remembered the amazing "AIDS Quilt"
and thought that a quilt made in memory
of those that were lost, would be
something that not only we could busy ourselves
with, but it was a project that lots of
folks could help with. It was also a
way for people to express their support,
love and grief with those that had suffered
loss. God does work in mysterious ways!
Like i said, Mom and I had never quilted
before, but we felt led to this project so,
we got to work...

The Finished Quilt
With squares sent in from four countries, the quilt has
over 300 squares total and
measures 15x21 feet.

Finding the Squares...
For weeks we made and distributed flyers all over our community and the surrounding
areas. We e-mailed and posted the request
for help-for anyone, young or old, professional
or novice-to send in 12x12 squares with
their own sentiments in any medium they
chose to be included in a quilt that would be
sewn together and given to the families.
And the replies stared coming in!
From the Isle of Islay in Scotland
to Atlanta, Georgia we received boxes
and envelopes with kind folks hearts
worked right into the fabric.
The original idea was to make three quilts-
one for each of the areas attacked, but as
the project unfolded, we thought it was a
stronger statement of how our country
has held together to make one large quilt-
symbolizing how people, no matter who they are
and where they live, can unite and
hold together under the most horrible of
circumstances and be even stronger.
And how anyone, anywhere can make a difference,
no matter how small the contribution.
So enjoy the pictures of the finished
project and to all that helped out
(we are in the process of collecting all names
on the squares and will post a page with
everyone's name on it this week)
we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Please say a prayer in remembrance of
those that were lost and those they
left behind not only on 9/11/02, but
every day.
God Bless you all!
